De was dumped out of Bete Noire and right back where she left from, cramped into the back seat of the Impala pulled over to the side of a country highway sleeping. In another life she had woken up from this roadside nap and driven straight into Bete Noire, but those memeories were qucikly fading, no matter how hard she tried to hold on to them. She scribbled out a few words-Bete Noire, Sam, Sam, Dean, Dean, Draco, angels, Claire, Olive, Castiel, Jimmy, police and a handful more, but by the time she was pulling into a road side dinner the list was nearly meaning less, besides having her sisters name on it. Twice. Soon it was cleared out with all the other trash that collected when you pretty much live in your car, because she wasn't about to start keeping up some bull shit dream journal.
Life was too crazy for that anyway. Her dad's distance had become something more. He could be king of avoidance, but this was not his average behavior pattern. She tracked him down to his last case, and knew she'd need help. And really, it wasn't a bad excuse to reach out to her sister, who she hadn't been able to forget how badly she missed as she had before.
It took a little convincing to talk Sam into it, but soon they were back in their old, if now slightly awkward roles. De found the key to dad's whereabouts, and they managed to get through the weekend without killing each other. De dropped Sam off and was heading out of town when her car radio went nuts. She hightailed it back to see the apartment ablaze, and only just got her screaming sister out in time.
Sam's boyfriend was dead, just like their mother had died. Now their father's revenge was Sam's revenge, and De has her sister back in a way she never would have wanted. They followed their father's journal around the country, saving people and hunting things while Sam brewed over Jess's murder and De tried to bridge the gap between them, and Sam and their father.
They found him, and a confrontation with the yellow eyed demon wasn't far behind. It ended with the Impala t-boned, the demon still on the loose, and De in the hospital barely hanging on. John took matter into his own hand, trading his life, his soul, and the demon killing Colt to save De.
This of course sat really well with De. And it didn't help that her sister was starting to have freaky visions. And disapper for periods of time. And wanted to start a support group for demon blood fed babies. De starts to learn about the way things work, the bigger picture that they have always been playing in but never really known, the way the demons work and the deals they make. She starts to get a sense that something bigger is happening here, and that a noose is tightening that they can't see. Although they always sort of knew their were other hunters, the sisters begin to realize there is a whole community here full of them; their relationship with Bobby deepen as he takes their place as father figure, they meet Jo and Ellen (and boy does that blond seem familiar...), and everything seems to be circling around Sammy. Till one day she just vanishes.
They manage to track Sam down thanks to one of the other's taken with Sam, a psychic, however just as they get there Sam was fatally stabbed in front of De, dying in her arms.
De was dead inside. There wasn't a chance in hell she was going forward with out Sam. Sam was hers to take care of, what she'd spent most of her life protecting, caring for. On top of that, she knew, between the two of them, Sam was far more likely to be able to live with out De. De wasn't sure how she was even waking up in the morning.
She watched over her sister's body, ignoring the world outside, ignoring that Sam's death hadn't stopped the fact that the yellow eyed demon, Azazeal had the colt, and a human to use to unlock the gates to hell and release the demons out into the world. All of the piece had been moved into place, and De knew this was bigger than them, but she honestly could not give a fuck. All she could do was sit and watch over her sister's body. Until she decided that wasn't all she could do.
So she struck up a deal with a demon to bring Sam back, following in the steps of dear old Daddy. And with Sam back they managed to not actually do much of anything more than watch as all the demons of Hell were released. But their father was set free and did help them kill Azazeal, so that's something.
It didn't take long for Sam to realize what De had done for her, and Sam was not a happy camper. But De didn't care. She didn't regret her choice. While Sam railed to try to find a way to save De, De did her best to enjoy her life, or what was left of it. Aggressively. Sam wanted to fix things, and De, knowing that "fixing things" just meant Sam would go in her place, and she wasn't going to have any of that shit. De wished Sam would get that, that Sam would stop prancing around with demons and spend this last year with her. Make it count.
And before she knew it, the hell hounds were at her heels, and goodbye was too soon.
And then she was in hell.
Hell was, well, hell. Physical torture lead to psychological torture. To someone like De, the psychological torture was her undoing. Sam, her father, every bit of her past was ripped out, twisted up, stretched out and held against her. Everything that she was got scraped out, played with and put back in for the next day. Sometimes literally.
So when she was ripped up by the light, and brought blinking back into the world, she was not the same person. Her sister seemed more concerned with running around with demons, drinking their blood and somehow thinking that would save the world. The angels wanted something from her, something she didn't know and didn't want to give. Especially to the one with the big blue eyes that always seemed to show up when she least wanted. And when she most did.
The bond with her sister, something she'd always felt was the strongest thing in her life, was now becoming another set of chains to hold her down. She didn't even know if Sammy still felt that bond. She sure as hell didn't act like it. And at night, in her head, everything good about their relationship, everything good in De's life was tainted by hell.
Caught in heaven versus hell, the sister's were just pawns of both sides, but that fact didn't help to lighten the load of guilt on the fact that they had just managed to help Lucifer be released on Earth. Finding out that they were the chosen vessels for Lucifer and Michael.
But only if they say yes.
It was a choice that settled deep into De's boned. Say yes. Let the angels have their way, with everything that entails. The angels who had fucked them over at every step. And Sam was Lucifer. Knowing how that weighed on her sister only dragged her down more. Being with Sam wasn't working, being apart from Sam didn't work, and then there was Castiel in the middle of it all. Another puzzle De couldn't get her mind wrapped around. She didn't have friends. She really didn't have close friends. But here was this angel, working her way into De's life in ways she didn't know how to cope with.
Every attempt they made to save humanity was blocked, no matter how they tried, and the body count of their comrades (and the innocent bystandards caught in the middle) kept getting higher and higher. Still messed up inside from hell, and watching everyone close to them losing more and more, watching every way they tried to fight this fail over and over, De gave up hope. Cas was falling, Bobby was paralysed, the gap between her and Sam seemed like she'd never be able to close it. The angels had even pulled her sister back from death to use her in De's place.
So she decided to say yes.
However her attempt was cut off by a very angry Castiel. A very angry Castiel who, apparently could throw a much meaner punch than De was really expecting. And then the stupid angel cheated and knocked her out.
And then she woke up in her apartment in Bete Noire.
